Topline

Sabrina Carpenter has emerged as the most popular artist on TikTok in the United States for 2024, according to the platform’s annual year-end report released on Wednesday. Key Facts

In the rankings based on views on their TikTok accounts, Carpenter not only topped the charts in the U.S. but also secured the 10th position globally. The global list was led by Mexican singer Yeri Mua and the South Korean boy band ENHYPEN.

Following Carpenter in the U.S. rankings was Ice Spice, who gained mainstream recognition last year with her remix of Taylor Swift’s “Karma.” The list continued with notable artists such as NLE Choppa, Billie Eilish, and Meghan Trainor.

Among the most popular songs in the U.S. based on TikTok video creations were “MILLION DOLLAR BABY (VHS)” by Tommy Richman, “CARNIVAL” by ¥$, Kanye West, and Ty Dolla $ign, and “Tell Ur Girlfriend” by Lay Bankz.

Interestingly, Taylor Swift, who dominated TikTok with her Eras Tour last year, did not make an appearance in TikTok’s most popular music data for 2024. This absence is attributed to her music being pulled from the app for nearly three months due to a licensing dispute with Universal Music Group.

Only three artists—Ice Spice, Meghan Trainor, and NLE Choppa—managed to repeat their presence from the 2023 list, highlighting the ever-changing landscape of TikTok’s music scene.

Big Number

A staggering 140 million TikTok videos were created using the top 10 songs in the United States. Many artists who gained popularity on TikTok, including Sabrina Carpenter, Lay Bankz, and Flo Milli, have seen their musical careers flourish, achieving recognition at the Grammy Awards and charting on Billboard and Spotify.

Tangent

The annual TikTok report also highlighted some of the most popular trends of the year. Educators gained significant traction, with influencers like Shelby Lattimore and Deidre Kelly attracting large audiences. The #TeachersOfTikTok tag was utilized 5.5 million times between January and November. The STEM community, featuring figures like astronaut Kellie Gerardi and educators like Chemical Kim, saw a 45% increase in #science posts compared to the previous year. Additionally, posts under the #SportsOnTikTok tag surged by 350%, while #BookTok generated 1.2 million posts within the first ten months of 2024.

Surprising Fact

This year, TikTok trends influenced the designation of two “words of the year.” The phrase “very demure, very mindful,” popularized by Jools Lebron and echoed by celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Jennifer Lopez, led Dictionary.com to name “demure” the 2024 Word of the Year. Similarly, Charli XCX’s “Brat Summer,” which gained traction through a dance created by Kelley Heyer, resulted in “brat” being recognized as the Word of the Year by Collins Dictionary.

Key Background

With over 1 billion global users and 170 million in the U.S., TikTok continues to be a dominant force in social media. However, it faces scrutiny from lawmakers due to its parent company’s ties to the Chinese government, raising concerns about user privacy. President Joe Biden and other lawmakers have expressed that TikTok poses a privacy threat as long as it remains under Chinese ownership. Earlier this year, Biden signed a law that could lead to a ban on the app unless its parent company, ByteDance, divests its stake in TikTok by January 19, just before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. TikTok has since filed a lawsuit against the government regarding the potential ban, while Trump has made promises to protect the app during his campaign. A federal court is expected to rule soon on whether to uphold the federal ban on TikTok.
