A Global Music Project Celebrating Jamaica’s Cultural Heritage
A groundbreaking global music initiative, deeply rooted in Jamaica’s rich sonic and cultural heritage, is on the verge of unveiling its full soundtrack. This project, known as Versions, is set to launch alongside the Versions Hub—a digital archive dedicated to preserving the stories, music, and wisdom that emerged from this transformative journey.
The Vision Behind Versions
Versions is the brainchild of Darkspark, a Canadian non-profit organization committed to leveraging the power of music for social change. The project has garnered significant recognition, including an Anthem Award in 2024 from the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (The Webbys), highlighting its impactful contributions to arts and education.
A Diverse Fellowship of Emerging Artistes
At the heart of Versions is a year-long fellowship that brought together 27 emerging youth artistes from across the globe, including four talented individuals from Jamaica: Yinga, Lex MD, Johdan, and Kyle Haddad. This diverse cohort also included participants from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, Trinidad, Canada, and the USA, creating a rich tapestry of voices and perspectives. The fellowship offered not only mentorship but also wellness support and leadership training, fostering a nurturing environment for creativity and collaboration.
Embracing Jamaican Traditions
Inspired by Jamaica’s vibrant versioning and juggling traditions—where artistes create unique songs over shared riddims—participants engaged in a collaborative process that allowed them to showcase their distinct voices. They worked alongside thought leaders, celebrity mentors, and top-tier producers, crafting powerful music while also designing and implementing community impact projects. This blend of artistry and social responsibility underscores the project’s commitment to making a difference.
The Creative Minds Behind the Project
Versions was conceived by Mel Larkin and D’Ari Lisle, both musicians and social innovators with a track record of using music and storytelling to create transformative experiences for youth worldwide. Their previous work earned them an award for intercultural innovation from the United Nations, further solidifying their commitment to social change through the arts.
Lisle describes Versions as “a love letter to Jamaica,” emphasizing its role in honoring the resilience, creativity, and impact of the nation’s elders and ancestors. He views the project as a tribute to this legacy, showcasing how music can serve as a tool for empowerment, a voice for the unheard, and a catalyst for social justice.
Influences and Collaborations
The emerging artistes drew inspiration from a wealth of Jamaican musical talent, including mentors like Sean Paul, Lila Ike, Chronixx, and Mutabaruka. They also benefited from the wisdom of cultural icons such as Dr. Carolyn Cooper, Mikie Bennett, and Uncle Ronnie of 8 Mile Sound. With music production led by JLL and The Wixard, the participants reimagined the Jamaican tradition of versioning, breathing new life into a practice that has historically empowered voices across generations.
Strengthening Community Ties
The project’s deep Jamaican roots were further reinforced by the contributions of Kareece Lawrence, an artiste and community engagement producer, alongside child justice leader Heather Gallimore. Additional support came from industry veterans like Sharon Burke and Team Shaggy, as well as Gabre Selassie of Kingston Dub Club. Their collective efforts ensured that the project remained grounded in the cultural and social realities of Jamaica.
