Celebrating Soul Music at GIAC’s First Annual SoulFest
On September 21, the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) will host its inaugural SoulFest, a celebration of the diverse musical offspring of soul music. This all-day event will take over the 300 block of West Court Street, surrounding the Alex Haley pool and the adjacent ICSD playfields. From 11 AM to 10 PM, attendees can expect a vibrant atmosphere filled with national, regional, and local musical acts, all hosted by the talented singer and actress Cheryl Pepsii Riley.
Riley, known for her collaboration with Tyler Perry and her hit song "Thanks for My Child," brings a wealth of experience and charisma to the event. Her presence promises to elevate the festival, as she engages the audience with her powerful voice and infectious energy.
Headlining Acts and Local Talent
The festival will feature a lineup of remarkable artists, including headliner Stout, whose pop/rock and R&B singles have made waves on the UK Soul Chart Breakers. Stout’s impressive resume includes performances at prestigious events such as the MTV Awards and Coachella, showcasing her ability to captivate audiences across various platforms.
Among the other performers is Serena Young, a gospel powerhouse whose vocal style channels the emotional depth of legends like Etta James and James Brown. Fresh off a European tour with the Harlem Gospel Choir, Young’s performance is sure to be a highlight of the festival.
Pianist and vocalist Terrence Cunningham will also grace the stage, known for his alternative soul sound. His rendition of The Temptations’ classic "My Girl" gained significant recognition on the television show The Voice, further solidifying his place in the contemporary soul scene.

The festival will also feature Jorge T. Cuevas and his Caribe Jazz Allstars, a well-known Latin band in Ithaca. Cuevas’s unique sound combines salsa, merengue, and bossa nova, creating a rich tapestry of Latin music that complements the soul theme of the festival.
