Empowering Women in Fintech: PalmPay’s Purple Woman Initiative
By Chinenye Anuforo
In a significant move to bridge the gender gap in the technology sector, financial technology company PalmPay has taken a bold step by empowering over 100 women in fintech during a recent event. This initiative, part of the company’s Purple Woman programme, aims to equip young women with essential digital skills, fostering inclusivity in industries that have historically been male-dominated.
A Commitment to Inclusivity
PalmPay’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jiapei Yan, emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for women in the fintech space. “At PalmPay, we believe in saying ‘Yes to More,’ not just for our customers but also for greater impact, opportunities, and innovation,” Yan stated. This philosophy underpins the company’s mission to ensure that young women are not merely participants but leaders in the burgeoning digital economy.
Comprehensive Training for Future Leaders
Over the course of two days, the event provided training in various critical areas, including human resources, data analysis, software development, and UI/UX design. Recognizing the underrepresentation of women in finance and fintech, PalmPay is actively working to bridge this gap by equipping women with the skills necessary to excel in these fields. This hands-on training is designed to empower participants with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the complexities of the tech landscape.
Real Opportunities for Career Growth
In addition to the training, PalmPay announced internship opportunities for 10 outstanding participants. These internships will offer hands-on experience over the next three to six months, allowing the selected individuals to work closely with PalmPay teams. Yan highlighted the importance of these opportunities, stating that they are crucial for developing skills and advancing careers in the fintech sector.
The Power of Mentorship and Networking
Yan also stressed the significance of mentorship and community-building among participants. She encouraged attendees to share their knowledge, build meaningful networks, and embrace the limitless opportunities that lie ahead. This focus on collaboration and support is vital in fostering a strong community of women in fintech, where shared experiences can lead to collective growth and empowerment.
A Long-Term Commitment to Empowerment
Femi Hanson, PalmPay’s Head of Marketing and Communications, further elaborated on the broader objectives of the Purple Woman initiative. He noted that the Masterclass is not merely a one-off event but represents a long-term commitment to empowering women in the industry. “Unlike some competitors, we don’t just make promises; we follow through by training women and giving them real opportunities to apply their skills,” Hanson remarked. This aligns with the year’s theme, ‘Accelerating Action,’ which emphasizes the need for active measures to bridge the gender gap and create meaningful opportunities for women in tech.
Insights from Industry Experts
The event featured renowned career coach Chidiogo Ikenna, who spoke on the importance of self-awareness in making informed career choices. Her session, titled “Self-Discovery and Career Growth,” highlighted that understanding oneself is the first step toward success. “Without self-awareness, many individuals find themselves in the wrong careers, making poor decisions, and feeling unfulfilled,” Ikenna explained.
To aid participants in their career planning, she introduced the SMART Goal Framework, a structured approach that encourages setting Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals. “To achieve success, goals should be clear and actionable. Instead of saying, ‘I want to be successful,’ say, ‘I want to complete a UI/UX certification in six months and apply for entry-level design roles,’” she advised. This practical guidance empowers participants to take actionable steps toward their professional aspirations.
A Vision for an Inclusive Fintech Industry
The event underscored PalmPay’s commitment to creating a more inclusive fintech industry, ensuring that women are equipped with the skills and opportunities necessary to thrive. By investing in the next generation of female leaders, PalmPay is not only contributing to the growth of the fintech sector but also paving the way for a more equitable future in technology. Through initiatives like the Purple Woman programme, the company is setting a powerful example of how organizations can actively participate in closing the gender gap and fostering a diverse workforce.
