“We’re showing Atlanta that there are a lot of Caribbean people here that come out to have fun,” says Thomas, one of the organizers of the vibrant Igloo Atlanta festival. This open-air celebration is not just an event; it’s a lively gathering that showcases the rich Caribbean culture thriving in the heart of Georgia.
A Festival of Rhythm and Joy
Held at Lithonia Park, the festival invites guests to bring their blankets and coolers filled with their favorite drinks. Attendees can immerse themselves in an afternoon filled with feel-good island rhythms. With rotating deejays spinning everything from dancehall and soca to reggae, Afrobeats, and amapiano, the atmosphere is electric. The lineup includes popular sound selectors like DJ Kash, Coppershot Music, and Dutty Dex, ensuring that the dance floor stays packed.
Carnival Spirit in the Air
One of the festival’s highlights is the dazzling dancers dressed in bright feathers, performing carnival-themed routines that transport attendees straight to the Caribbean. “It’s a party that feels like a festival,” Thomas explains. “We didn’t want to deviate from the original core or have people distracted by performances.” Instead, the focus is on the crowd, who become their own mixologists for the day.
A Unique Experience
DJ Kash, known for his weekly amapiano party at Rock Steady Atlanta, shares his excitement: “Igloo has always been about having a great time, and that’s what I’m all about. The audience can expect a dope blend of genres to keep them dancing the whole time.” This festival is more than just music; it’s about community, connection, and celebrating Caribbean culture.
The After Party: Bass and Waist
This year, Graham and Thomas are introducing “Bass and Waist,” the official after-party at Vybez Executive Event Center. Starting at 10 p.m., this intimate gathering will focus on dancehall and soca music, allowing the party to continue long into the night. “When Igloo Atlanta is done, a lot of people don’t want the party to end,” Thomas says. “It’s a continuation of the vibes.”
Celebrating Caribbean Heritage
Graham and Thomas also run RepJA, a streetwear brand that embodies Jamaican culture. Launched in 2007, the brand features vibrant designs and catchphrases that resonate with Caribbean identity. “We wanted to create something stylish and cool that represented us,” Graham reflects. Their clothing has been worn by celebrities like Fabolous and Wiz Khalifa, showcasing the brand’s growing influence.
A Hub for Caribbean Creatives
Thomas, who moved to Atlanta from New York, emphasizes the city’s welcoming nature for Caribbean creatives. “Atlanta has been dope because it’s a place where Caribbeans who are creatives can come, build, and keep our culture vibrant.” With plans to expand into music, film, and mentorship programs for aspiring designers, the duo aims to uplift the Caribbean community.
