Princess Resorts Jamaica Reopens: A Beacon of Hope for Hanover

WESTERN BUREAU: After three long months of closure due to Hurricane Melissa, Princess Resorts Jamaica in Hanover has thrown open its doors once again. This reopening is not just a milestone for the resort; it’s a significant boost for the local community, bringing back 1,000 staff members and reigniting confidence among travel agents who are already booking major conferences at the property.

The atmosphere during the reopening weekend was electric, filled with a sense of relief and renewed energy. Dr. Dave Chin Tung, the operator of the award-winning Go! Jamaica Travel, noted that the excitement among staff was palpable. “Three months is a heck of a long time,” he remarked, observing how employees greeted guests with open arms, eager to return to their roles. “It really feels like a return to normality.”

A Hub for Conferences

Chin Tung emphasized the importance of Princess Resorts as a conference hub for Jamaica’s tourism sector. With several major events already on the calendar for March and April, the resort is set to host gatherings that will require between 250 and 500 rooms across its Princess Grand and Princess Senses properties. “That’s real business coming back on stream,” he said, highlighting the economic impact of these events.

Phased Reopening and Positive Outlook

The management at Princess Resorts Jamaica has taken a careful approach to reopening, ensuring service excellence while gradually rebuilding occupancy. Kareen Hall, the resort group’s director of sales, shared that February occupancy is currently tracking at about 60%, with weekends peaking in the 80s and 90s. “Figures are expected to climb steadily in the coming weeks as operations ramp up,” she added, painting a hopeful picture for the future.

During the closure, management maintained close engagement with staff, implementing supportive measures to keep team members connected. This commitment has paid off, as the majority of employees remained loyal to the company, ready to deliver exceptional service to returning guests.

Restoring Destination Confidence

Kareem Lewis, operator of KLM Enterprise, echoed the sentiment that the reopening is crucial for restoring confidence among travelers. His agency focuses on FIT (free independent traveler) bookings, and he noted a surge in interest since the resort’s reopening. “Since the opening, we’ve been getting a lot of requests for Princess, especially for March and April,” he said, emphasizing that many clients were waiting for clarity before making travel plans.

Lewis highlighted the resort’s appeal, noting its scale, flexibility, and diverse offerings. From intimate accommodations to swim-up rooms and private villas, there’s something for everyone. “The customer service has been excellent, and the restaurant offerings really stand out,” he added, mentioning the variety of cuisines available, including Japanese, Jamaican, and seafood.

A Bright Future Ahead

With staff back on the job, conferences returning, and leisure demand on the rise, the reopening of Princess Resorts Jamaica signals a renewed momentum for Jamaica’s tourism sector. As the island continues its recovery from Hurricane Melissa, one can’t help but wonder: What other opportunities lie ahead for Jamaica’s vibrant tourism landscape?
