IOG, the Developer Behind Cardano, Invests in Kenyan Fintech Pezesha

Pezesha Secures $11 Million Pre-Series A Investment to Empower African SMEs

Pezesha, a pioneering debt marketplace tailored for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Africa, has recently announced a significant pre-Series A investment of $11 million. This funding marks a pivotal moment for the Kenya-based startup as it sets its sights on expanding operations into additional African markets, including Nigeria, Rwanda, and Francophone Africa.

The Investment Details

The funding round comprised a strategic mix of $6 million in equity and $5 million in debt. Leading the charge was Women’s World Banking Capital Partners II (WWBCP II), a $103 million fund dedicated to supporting women-focused initiatives. Other notable investors included Verdant Frontiers, a venture firm concentrating on early-stage African companies, cFund, which invests in projects leveraging the Cardano blockchain, and Input Output Global (IOG), the developer behind Cardano.

Hilda Moraa, CEO of Pezesha, expressed the company’s mission succinctly: “Pezesha is democratizing financial services to the underserved SMEs through its infrastructure that has validated trust, rockstar team and scale. We are allowing distribution models for our partners to grow with little acquisition costs while increasing retention and profitability.” This statement encapsulates the startup’s commitment to empowering SMEs through innovative financial solutions.

How Pezesha Works

At its core, Pezesha has developed a robust digital lending infrastructure that pools funds from debt investors and channels them as working capital to SMEs across Sub-Saharan Africa. Over the past two years, the fintech company has successfully disbursed loans to more than 100,000 businesses in Kenya, Uganda, and Ghana. Pezesha offers loans of up to $10,000 at competitive single-digit interest rates, with a repayment period of one year, making it an attractive option for small business owners.

The Web 3.0 Upshot

The involvement of Web3 firms like cFund and IOG indicates that Pezesha is tapping into the decentralized finance (DeFi) landscape as an alternative funding source. DeFi has emerged as a game-changer in the financial sector, providing access to affordable capital at rates significantly lower than traditional lending options in many African countries. Many DeFi loans feature single-digit interest rates, a stark contrast to the high double-digit rates prevalent in the region.

Charles Hoskinson, Co-founder of IOG and Cardano, shared his enthusiasm about the investment, stating, “I’m delighted to announce our investment in Pezesha. Facilitating the movement of capital into emerging markets to support economic growth and job creation is a core promise of blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Our vision is centered on using technology to make it easier for people across the globe to borrow and lend to each other in a regulated way. This investment in Pezesha is an important milestone, and we’re excited to be a part of their growth story.”

Looking Back

IOG’s investment in Pezesha comes approximately eight months after Hoskinson expressed intentions to develop a DeFi loan service in Africa. He highlighted the continent’s potential for benefiting from such financial innovations, stating, “My goal [in] the second half of 2022 [is] to figure out how to put all the pieces together to get an end-to-end microfinance transaction on Cardano.” This foresight underscores the growing recognition of Africa as a fertile ground for fintech advancements.

DeFi Financing is Growing in Africa

The trend of integrating DeFi protocols into African lending practices is gaining momentum. The borderless nature of these protocols lowers entry barriers, allowing anyone with the necessary collateral to secure loans without the stringent credit rating requirements typical of traditional financial systems.

In June, Pngme, an African lending API provider, partnered with Masa Finance, a U.S.-based company, to promote the adoption of DeFi credit services across the continent. Similarly, Nigeria-based Xend Finance collaborates with credit unions to access higher and more stable yields through DeFi saving and lending solutions.

As Pezesha continues to expand its reach and innovate within the financial landscape, it stands as a testament to the transformative potential of fintech in addressing the needs of underserved SMEs in Africa.
