Women’s Investments Outperform Men’s by Four Percent in 2024: A Shift in the Financial Landscape
New data from Revolut reveals a significant trend in the investment world: women investors outperformed their male counterparts by four percent in 2024. This marks a pivotal moment, suggesting a potential shift in the dynamics of investing and financial empowerment among women.
Challenging Stereotypes
While trends like "girl math" may have started as lighthearted banter, they often perpetuate negative stereotypes about young women’s financial habits and knowledge. However, the statistics from Revolut challenge these notions, highlighting that women are an underestimated force in the investment space. The data indicates not only superior performance but also a growing engagement among women in investing, with a remarkable 31 percent increase in account openings compared to the previous year.
Age Breakdown of Performance
When dissecting the data by age, women aged 45 to 54 emerged as the top performers, earning 1.2 percent more than men in the same age group. Millennial women (ages 25 to 34) closely followed, achieving 0.9 percent higher profits than their male peers. Women aged 55 to 64 also showed strong results, outperforming men by 0.7 percent. Interestingly, while young women (18 to 24) recorded one percent less profit than their male counterparts, they were instrumental in driving account growth, with a 32 percent increase in new accounts.
Insights from Revolut’s CEO
Yana Shkrebenkova, CEO of Wealth and Trading at Revolut UK, expressed optimism about these findings. “It’s refreshing but not unexpected to see women finally out-investing men,” she stated. Shkrebenkova noted that Gen-Z women are becoming increasingly active in the investment space, motivated by better access to online resources. Their more risk-averse and deliberate investment strategies may contribute to their success, positioning them well for long-term gains.
Closing the Investment Gap
As consumers seek new avenues for financial growth, Revolut’s data indicates a record rise in investment accounts across the board. Women are leading this charge, with a 31 percent year-over-year increase in trading accounts, compared to a 20 percent increase for men. Notably, women aged 45 to 54 accounted for a significant portion of this growth, with a 44 percent increase, while young women (18 to 24) contributed a 31 percent boost.
Shkrebenkova emphasized the empowerment of women in investing, stating, “While men have historically been considered more confident investors, our data shows that women are becoming increasingly empowered to embrace trading and wealth management.” This empowerment is expected to continue narrowing the gender investment gap as women gain confidence in their financial skills.
The Role of Technology in Investment Trends
In 2024, technology stocks dominated the investment landscape for UK customers, with NVIDIA emerging as the most purchased and sold US stock. The company’s share price skyrocketed by 186 percent, reflecting the growing interest in tech investments among both male and female investors.
Revolut Invest has also seen a surge in activity, with a 150 percent increase in monthly active traders and a 200 percent rise in monthly trading activity. This uptick underscores the increasing engagement of both genders in the investment arena.
A Future of Financial Equality
Revolut is committed to leveling the playing field for female investors. Shkrebenkova remarked, “We’re not just capturing a trend; we’re amplifying it — providing the tools, technology, and global community to ensure women get a front-row seat in the future of finance.” This commitment to empowering women in investing is crucial as the financial landscape continues to evolve.
The data from Revolut not only highlights the impressive performance of women investors but also signals a broader cultural shift towards financial equality. As more women engage in investing and demonstrate their capabilities, the traditional narratives surrounding gender and finance are being rewritten.
