Accion Ventures Launches $61.6 Million Fund to Empower Fintech Startups
Accion has recently announced the closing of a significant $61.6 million fund aimed at investing in early-stage fintech companies that cater to the financially underserved populations in Africa and beyond. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in Accion’s ongoing commitment to fostering financial inclusion through innovative technology.
A Legacy of Impact Investment
This new fund is the second from Accion Venture Lab, now rebranded as Accion Ventures. It builds on a decade-long investment strategy that emphasizes the dual goals of social impact and financial returns. By focusing on early-stage venture capital investments, Accion Ventures aims to bridge the gap between traditional financial systems and the needs of underserved communities.
Targeting Fintech Innovations
The latest fund is set to make up to 30 new investments in fintech startups, with a particular emphasis on African companies. Michael Schlein, president and CEO of Accion, highlighted the immense potential of mobile technologies in emerging economies. He stated, "We see a significant opportunity to connect many small businesses and low-income consumers to the digital economy for the first time." This approach not only aims to generate financial returns but also strives to create opportunities that can alleviate poverty on a global scale.
Diverse Backers Fueling the Fund
The fund has garnered commitments from a diverse array of investors, including both existing and new partners. These include commercial and impact asset managers, development finance institutions, foundations, family offices, and strategic financial service companies. Notable partners include the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank FMO, Proparco, ImpactAssets, Ford Foundation, MetLife Asset Management, and Mastercard.
Recent Investments Spotlight
Among the fund’s initial investments are two promising fintech startups in Africa: PaidHR, a human resources tech company based in Nigeria, and Flowcart (formerly Sukhiba), an AI-powered conversational commerce and customer relationship management platform in Kenya. Accion Ventures led a seed round for PaidHR, raising $1.8 million in June 2025, while Flowcart secured $1.55 million in a similar round in August 2024. Other recent investments include Foyer in the U.S. and FinFra in Indonesia, showcasing the fund’s global reach.
Addressing Financial Exclusion
According to the World Bank’s 2025 Global Findex, a staggering 1.3 billion people remain unbanked, lacking access to essential financial services. Accion Ventures aims to address this gap, recognizing a $5.7 trillion annual financing shortfall for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. This presents a substantial market opportunity for innovative startups ready to disrupt traditional financial systems.
A Focus on Cutting-Edge Technologies
Accion Ventures is committed to supporting investments in tech companies that are at the forefront of fintech innovation. The fund emphasizes scaling companies that leverage embedded finance, alternative data, and generative AI (GenAI) to deliver impactful financial solutions. This focus aligns with Accion’s mission to empower underserved communities through technology.
Proven Track Record
Since its investment strategy was established in 2012, Accion Ventures has deployed $59.4 million into 76 companies across 39 countries, achieving 13 successful exits. Recent exits include Apollo Agriculture, which provides tech-enabled inputs and financing to smallholder farmers in Kenya and Zambia, and Lula, an all-digital lender for small and medium enterprises in South Africa.
Comprehensive Support for Startups
Beyond capital investment, Accion Ventures offers hands-on support to startups throughout their growth journey. This includes access to market expertise, board governance, networking opportunities, and strategic guidance from a dedicated portfolio engagement team. Rahil Rangwala, managing partner at Accion Ventures, emphasized the fund’s role in nurturing early-stage fintech innovators who utilize cutting-edge technologies to create sustainable financial solutions.
Global Insights with Local Expertise
Amee Parbhoo, another managing partner at Accion Ventures, noted that the fund’s global portfolio and local approach enable it to quickly identify and respond to emerging trends. This strategy not only drives local innovations but also facilitates the sharing of insights across different geographies. Parbhoo stated, "We aim to be one of the first institutional checks a company receives and will continue to engage early, while maintaining sufficient reserves to back our winners as they scale."
Through this new fund, Accion Ventures is poised to make a significant impact in the fintech landscape, empowering startups that are dedicated to transforming the financial lives of millions around the world.
