Celebrating 30 Years of Giuseppe Zanotti: A Journey Through Luxury Footwear

Earlier this month, the world of luxury fashion was abuzz as renowned shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti graced Thailand to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his illustrious brand. The event, held at his boutique in Central Chidlom, attracted a star-studded guest list, including numerous VIPs and Thai celebrities, all eager to pay homage to the designer’s remarkable journey in the fashion industry. As Prestige reflects on this milestone, it’s essential to delve into the origins and rich history of the Giuseppe Zanotti brand.

The Early Years: From Ice Cream to Design

Giuseppe Zanotti was born on April 17, 1957, in San Mauro Pascoli, Italy, a region celebrated for its shoe manufacturing heritage. Interestingly, he was raised in a family of ice cream makers, yet his passion for design emerged early on. Even as a child, Giuseppe found himself sketching new creations for cars, bicycles, and even the cones for his family’s gelateria. This creative spark would eventually guide him toward a career in fashion.

In the 1980s, Zanotti briefly ventured into the world of music as a radio DJ, fueled by a lifelong love for music that began with his guitar-playing days. Immersed in the vibrant music subculture, particularly the rock genre, he became captivated by the fashion of iconic artists. This fascination prompted him to pivot from music to study shoemaking, where he honed his skills at local factories near his hometown.

The Birth of a Brand

By the early 1990s, Giuseppe took a bold step and launched his own brand by acquiring a small shoe company called Vicini. This venture was divided into three parts: a style office and two departments focused on jewellery and heels. His inaugural collection debuted at the Plaza Hotel in 1994, quickly capturing the attention of fashion enthusiasts and critics alike.

The success of this collection paved the way for collaborations with prominent fashion houses such as Proenza Schouler and Balmain. In 2000, Zanotti opened his first boutique in Milan, marking the beginning of his expansion into other fashion capitals like New York, Paris, London, and Dubai. By 2007, he had also made his mark in the Chinese market through a franchise agreement with Life Luxury Group.

A Distinctive Aesthetic

Giuseppe Zanotti’s rise to fame can be attributed to his innovative approach to design. He is known for experimenting with unique shapes, decorative elements, and a distinctive aesthetic that seamlessly blends rock and hip-hop influences with classic, elegant silhouettes. His creations quickly became favorites among celebrities, including Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Gwen Stefani. Each design begins with a sketch that captures not only the shoe’s shape but also its texture and movement, akin to a visual artist translating emotion onto paper.

Some of Zanotti’s most iconic designs include the Combat Sandal, inspired by a Moroccan sunset; the Bloc Sandal, which combines the comfort of a wedge with the lightness of a stiletto; and the Choker Sandal, adorned with a jewel strand that drapes elegantly over the foot. Other notable creations include the Deco Pump, featuring crocodile-embossed leather and a Swarovski toe jewel, and the Ring Sandal, a celebrated trademark of the brand.

Expanding Horizons

In 2010, Zanotti expanded his brand’s offerings by introducing new product categories, including jewellery and sportswear. This expansion led to the introduction of luxury sneakers, which have since become staples in the fashion world. In 2012, the brand debuted Giuseppe Homme, a men’s shoe line that incorporates hip-hop influences across sneakers, moccasins, and combat boots.

During this period, several iconic creations for women emerged, including the Adele Wedge, designed in collaboration with Lady Gaga for her ‘Born This Way Ball’ tour; the Venere Sandal, which draws parallels between a woman’s body and a serpent; and the Tattoo Sandal, famously supported by Kanye West for the cover of his Cruel Summer compilation album. The Pyramid Sandal, worn by Jennifer Lopez on the cover of her Dance Again album, further solidified Zanotti’s status in the luxury footwear market.

Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations

In 2014, L Catterton, a subset of the LVMH Group, acquired a 30 percent stake in Vicini Spa, the parent company of the Giuseppe Zanotti brand. This partnership significantly enhanced the brand’s market presence and popularity among celebrities and music icons worldwide. In 2019, Zanotti launched a capsule collection in collaboration with Rita Ora, showcasing the brand’s signature sculptural silhouettes and decorative motifs, followed by additional collaborations with artists like Swae Lee and Evan Mock.

In 2020, the brand introduced the Giuseppe Zanotti Icon Project, aimed at reissuing its most iconic designs. Now, as the brand celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2024, Giuseppe’s journey continues to inspire.

A Grand Celebration in Thailand

To commemorate this significant milestone, Giuseppe Zanotti traveled to Thailand for an anniversary event at the brand’s boutique in Central Chidlom, located within LuxeGalerie. The event was a star-studded affair, attended by influential figures in the fashion industry, including Sonya Singha, Opal Suchata, and Kirana “Jazzy” Chewter, among others.

Reflecting on his career, Giuseppe remarked, “For me, shoes are not just a symbol of Roman craftsmanship and expertise—pioneers of the luxury shoe industry—but also a representation of potential. The more luxurious the design, whether enhanced with metal or rhinestones, the more powerful the message.”

The event also served as a platform to introduce the brand’s Fall-Winter 2024 collection, which pays tribute to the minimalist style of the 1990s. Characterized by clean lines and geometric shapes, the collection features ballet flats and riding boots presented in a nature-inspired color palette of olive green, chocolate brown, tan, clay, and black. Some designs incorporate textural elements that mimic snakeskin and crocodile skin.

Innovative Designs for the Modern Era

Giuseppe’s latest collections highlight his talent for reimagining iconic designs. For instance, he has transformed the Tuxedo shoe into a more delicate variation, moving away from its original heavy embellishments. This reworking extends to new loafer-style shoes made from hammered leather and suede, as well as revamped biker shoes featuring thick yet lightweight soles. The redesigned sneakers complement the rest of the collection, crafted using warm, neutral tones and comfortable materials like Napa leather.

As Giuseppe Zanotti continues to push the boundaries of luxury footwear, his journey from a small Italian town to the global fashion stage serves as a testament to creativity, innovation, and the enduring power of design.
