From Quantitative Analyst to Product Manager

Chirine BenZaied-Bourgerie: A Trailblazer in Fintech Innovation

Chirine BenZaied-Bourgerie is a name that resonates within the fintech industry, particularly as the head of innovation at Finastra. This financial software platform serves a diverse array of banks, covering everything from retail banking to capital markets. With a dedicated innovation team under her leadership, BenZaied-Bourgerie inspires Finastra’s 10,000 employees to embrace creativity and innovation in their work.

A Unique Career Path

BenZaied-Bourgerie’s journey to her current strategic role is anything but conventional. Armed with a degree in quantitative finance from Panthéon-Sorbonne in Paris, she initially embarked on her career as a quant. This role laid the groundwork for her future endeavors, as she transitioned into model validation and product management.

"I worked in financial engineering before moving into product," she explains. Her experience as a quant allowed her to engage directly with clients, and product management became a natural extension of that dynamic. "I became the intermediary between the client base and the engineering team," she notes, emphasizing the importance of understanding client needs and translating them into actionable roadmaps.

The Role of Women in Fintech

For women in engineering and quantitative roles, product management often serves as a viable next step. BenZaied-Bourgerie points out that there are anecdotal indications of more female product managers compared to quants and engineers. "Maybe it’s the people focus and ability to understand both sides," she suggests. This unique skill set allows women to balance the technical capabilities of engineers with the demands of customers, leading to successful outcomes in product roles.

The Importance of Technical Background

In the financial services sector, having a technical background can be a significant asset for product managers. BenZaied-Bourgerie highlights the complexities involved in building Finastra’s model validation team, particularly given the regulatory and risk management challenges. Her technical expertise has been invaluable in navigating these intricacies, underscoring the need for a solid foundation in quantitative finance.

Focus Areas in Innovation

In her current role, BenZaied-Bourgerie is concentrating on three pivotal areas: sustainable and inclusive finance, banking as a service, and decentralized finance (DeFi).

Sustainable and Inclusive Finance: This encompasses a broad spectrum of topics, including ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria, climate risk, and financial inclusion.
Banking as a Service: This concept revolves around the distribution of banking services through non-financial players. "Everyone is a fintech now," she reflects, highlighting the evolving landscape of financial services.
Decentralized Finance (DeFi): BenZaied-Bourgerie is keenly aware of how DeFi and blockchain technology are reshaping various sectors, including capital markets, trade finance, lending, and payments. "What we really see coming is how this changes other areas," she adds, indicating the transformative potential of these technologies.

Embracing Flexible Work

Based in Finastra’s Paris office, which is currently undergoing renovations, BenZaied-Bourgerie has adapted to a remote working environment. "Flexible working here is really flexible," she states, noting that employees can choose when to come into the office. This flexibility has proven beneficial for her family life, allowing her husband to be more present at home.

BenZaied-Bourgerie believes that the greater flexibility often found in fintech firms can encourage more women to enter the industry. "We don’t have enough women in the fintech space—it’s generally about 30%, and once you get to the C-Suite, it’s about 5-6%," she points out. Finastra aims for a more balanced representation, targeting a 50% female workforce, a goal already achieved within her innovation group.

The Future of Fintech

As the fintech landscape continues to evolve, leaders like Chirine BenZaied-Bourgerie are at the forefront of driving innovation and inclusivity. Her journey from quantitative finance to a strategic leadership role exemplifies the diverse pathways available in the industry. With a focus on sustainable finance, banking as a service, and the rise of DeFi, she is not only shaping the future of Finastra but also paving the way for more women to thrive in fintech.
