Remembering Giorgio Armani: A Fashion Legend
The fashion world is in mourning after the passing of acclaimed Italian designer Giorgio Armani on Thursday. His revolutionary aesthetic and cultural influence shaped wardrobes for over five decades, leaving an indelible mark on both men’s and women’s fashion. For Jamaican models who graced his runway, Armani was not just a designer; he was a mentor whose respect and attention made a lasting impact.
A Jamaican Connection
The Kingston-based SAINT International roster of models has frequently walked for Armani, showcasing their elegance on the catwalks of Milan and Paris. Colet Buckley, a former SAINT star from the early 2000s, reflected on the loss, saying, “It is a great loss, and, like everyone else in the fashion industry, I was saddened by it.” Buckley, who first worked with Armani in 2004, recalled how the designer treated him with respect and kindness. “He showed nothing but love to a boy from May Pen,” he shared during a call from London.
Buckley’s journey with Armani was remarkable. He walked for various lines, including the main Armani brand and the Emporio Armani diffusion line. “Being in his presence was a great learning experience,” he said, recalling a month spent in the Armani showroom, observing buyers from around the world.
Cherished Memories
One of Buckley’s fondest memories was Armani’s 50th anniversary show at Piazza Castello, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. “I remember messing about with him and interviewing him on a camcorder,” he reminisced. “Mr. Armani was very approachable. A part of my history died with him.”
Naki Depass, another SAINT model based in New York, echoed Buckley’s sentiments. “It was heartbreaking news to hear,” she said, reflecting on her time working with Armani. Depass first walked for him in March 2017 and quickly became a staple on his runway. “I did 15 shows between 2017 and 2022,” she noted, adding that she felt a deep connection to his designs. “His collections are the embodiment of grace, and I always felt very confident in his clothes.”
A Lasting Legacy
SAINT CEO Deiwght Peters emphasized the importance of honoring Armani’s legacy. “His greatness was deeply influential and changed the silhouettes of how men and women dressed,” he stated. Peters highlighted the impact Armani had on SAINT models, noting that Naki holds the record for the most runway appearances for the designer, with others like Tami Williams and Brad Allen also making their mark.
Armani passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. His fashion house confirmed that he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to his collections and future projects. At 91, he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
