Fraser McConnell Revved Up for Rally Barbados
KINGSTON: Jamaica’s very own Fraser McConnell, the island’s most successful international motorsport driver, is gearing up for an exhilarating weekend as he kicks off his Barbados rally campaign. The spotlight is on him as he prepares for his much-anticipated debut in the BCIC Rally Barbados (RB26), set to take place from May 29–31.
Getting Ready for the Big Show
This weekend marks the beginning of McConnell’s journey, as he and co-driver Justin Morin hit the roads for some crucial practice. They’ll participate in the Vaucluse Raceway Motorsports Club Double-Header Sprint and the Motoring Club Barbados Inc Spring Blaze. These events are not just for fun; they offer valuable seat time, allowing the duo to test their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX on the unique island road surfaces. It’s also a chance for them to build chemistry with their service crew, ensuring everything runs smoothly during the main event.
A Proud Jamaican Representation
McConnell, representing Team Frazzz, will be sporting a striking livery inspired by the black, green, and gold of Jamaica’s national flag. This vibrant design reflects the support he’s receiving from the Jamaica Tourist Board and sponsors like JustBet, Barita, TruShake, and Uncle Saaaal. His connection to Barbados runs deep; during his first visit for RB15, he witnessed fellow Jamaicans Jeff Panton and John Powell clinch victory, igniting his passion for the sport.
“I am so excited to finally check Rally Barbados off my bucket list,” McConnell shared. “I’ve always wanted to compete ever since I went to watch in 2015. Very rarely do you see fans with as much passion for motorsports as you do in Barbados, and I can’t wait to give them the show that they came to see.”
A Veteran Co-Driver
Joining McConnell is co-driver Justin Morin, who has experience rallying in Barbados. He previously finished sixth in an Evo IX at RB07 alongside Panton. Morin expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the island after a 20-year break. “I am super excited to be back rallying in Barbados in 2026 and look forward to teaming up with Fraser, who is a tremendous talent. It will be interesting to see how we stack up,” he said.
A Legacy in the Making
Fraser McConnell is not just any driver; he’s the youngest-ever Rally Jamaica winner, having claimed the title in 2017. His participation in Rally Barbados makes him the third RJ winner to compete in this prestigious event, joining the ranks of Panton and Kyle Gregg, who won BCIC RB25.
McConnell’s Evo IX competes in the Modified 4 category, which boasts a robust lineup this year, featuring crews from England, Scotland, and Wales. Local brothers Kurt, Mark, and Neil Thompson will also be in the mix, adding to the excitement.
“I won’t be able to fight at the front of the rally with my Group A machine, but I will definitely be trying to get in the mix when I can,” McConnell noted. “I have a lot to learn about Barbadian roads, and hearing pace notes again will be a bit different from what I have been used to. However, I am looking forward to the challenges that Justin and I will face, and you can count on us having a blast the entire way.”
