RIU Hotels & Resorts Expands Social Outreach in the Caribbean
In a heartwarming move, RIU Hotels & Resorts is stepping up its game in the Caribbean with new education-focused initiatives in the Bahamas and Jamaica. This effort is part of the company’s broader sustainability program, aptly named “Proudly Committed,” which aims to uplift children and communities where they operate.
A Helping Hand in the Bahamas
In the Bahamas, RIU has teamed up with the nonprofit organization Lend a Hand Bahamas to launch its first social collaboration in the country. This initiative, backed by a three-year commitment, will take root in a community center located in Grant’s Town. The goal? To support over 200 children and young people aged five to 18.
The program is designed to be a vibrant hub of learning and growth. It will offer a variety of extracurricular activities that focus on strengthening literacy and STEM education—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. But it doesn’t stop there! The initiative will also include socio-emotional workshops and culinary arts training, broadening opportunities for participants and helping them develop essential life skills.
Strengthening Education in Jamaica
Meanwhile, in Jamaica, RIU is enhancing its support for the Wested Educational Centre in Montego Bay. This center plays a crucial role in providing academic intervention for students who need a little extra help. Currently, it assists 77 students from over a dozen local schools, focusing on core subjects like reading and mathematics.
What makes this initiative even more special is its daily nutrition component. Students receive meals that fuel their minds and bodies, ensuring they’re ready to learn. The program is also embracing technology with a growing digital learning initiative that incorporates tablets to enhance classroom instruction.
Despite challenges posed by Hurricane Melissa, the Wested Educational Centre has resumed operations, continuing its mission to provide mentoring and academic support. The aim is clear: improve school retention and empower students to reach their full potential.
The RIU Method: A Framework for Change
Both initiatives are guided by what RIU calls the “RIU Method,” a social investment framework that prioritizes projects focused on health, education, child protection, and biodiversity. This structured approach ensures that the company’s efforts are impactful and sustainable.
With the launch of the Bahamas partnership and the expanded support in Jamaica, RIU is now part of a global network of over 90 partner organizations. Together, they are working on community and environmental projects that make a real difference.
