Jamaica Hi-5K: A Celebration of Community and Culture

On Saturday, May 10, the vibrant Miramar Regional Park came alive as over 2,000 attendees gathered for the sixth annual Jamaica Hi-5K Walk/Run. This lively event, organized by the Jamaica Hi5 Foundation in collaboration with the Jamaican Consulate for the Southeastern United States, was more than just a race; it was a celebration of movement, music, and community spirit.

A Star-Studded Affair

Co-hosted by Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam and Consul General Oliver Mair, the event was infused with the sounds of reggae music, creating an energetic atmosphere that resonated with participants. Among the high-profile supporters were reggae legends Sizzla and Ky-Mani Marley, who brought their star power to the event. Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown (VCB), serving as a Race Ambassador, added an extra layer of excitement by rewarding the top female finishers with gear from her activewear line, VCB Fit. “It’s all about promoting health and wellness,” VCB shared, emphasizing the importance of such community events.

A Nationwide Movement

The Jamaica Hi-5K isn’t just a local affair; it’s a movement that spans across the Southern U.S. Simultaneous races took place in cities like Central Florida, Atlanta, Houston, and Arizona, with a virtual option allowing participants from around the globe to join in. This inclusivity showcases the event’s commitment to bringing people together, regardless of location.

A Family-Friendly Event

Families, children in strollers, and wheelchair racers filled the course, highlighting the event’s dedication to inclusivity. Local leaders, including the Mayor and Vice Mayor, praised the race for its growing impact and its role in showcasing the strength of the Jamaican Diaspora. “It’s heartwarming to see so many families come together for a common cause,” remarked Vice Mayor.

Making a Difference

Proceeds from the race benefit over five medical clinics in Jamaica, expanding access to healthcare in underserved communities. For many participants, the event is not just about running; it’s about promoting wellness, culture, and connection. “Every step we take is a step towards helping others,” one participant noted, reflecting the collective spirit of giving back.

A Celebration of Culture

The post-race celebration was a feast for the senses, featuring live performances, delicious Caribbean food, and music that kept the spirit of the islands alive. From first-time walkers to seasoned runners, the Jamaica Hi-5K inspires people of all ages to move with purpose. “It’s not just a race; it’s a way to connect with our roots,” shared a participant, highlighting the cultural significance of the event.
